Top 10 Reasons the Bible is True

I've got a good friend who's probably a lot like you.  He loves the Bible and does his best to read it and live it every day.  There's one problem.  Some of his friends say the Bible isn’t true, and he's not always sure how to respond.   So I've created a list of the best arguments I can find for the credibility of the Bible. Interested?  Okay, here are my Top 10 Reasons the Bible is True. (If I missed any that are important to you, please add them in the comment section below.  I'd love to hear from you.)
  1. Manuscript Evidence.  There are way more copies of the biblical manuscripts, with remarkable consistency between them, than there are for any of the classics like Plato, Aristotle and Socrates.  "There is no body of ancient literature in the world which enjoys such a wealth of good textual attestation as the New Testament."  F.F. Bruce, The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?
  2. Archaeological Evidence.  Again and again archaeological discoveries have verified the accuracy of the historical and cultural references in the Bible.  The more they dig, the more it confirms the Bible.  “It is important to note that Near Eastern archaeology has demonstrated the historical and geographical reliability of the Bible in many important areas.” E.M. Blaiklock, The New International Dictionary of Biblical Archaeology.
  3. Eyewitness Accounts.  The Bible was written by people who witnessed the events it describes; many were persecuted or martyred but never changed their story.  Would you die for something you knew was untrue? “It is no moderate approbation of Scripture that it has been sealed by the blood of so many witnesses, especially when we reflect that they died to render testimony to the faith …with a firm and constant, yet sober, zeal toward God.” John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion.
  4. Corroborating Accounts. There are plenty of references in non-biblical sources to the events described in the Bible. The Jewish historian Josephus, born in 37 AD, “provide(s) indispensable background material for the student of…New Testament history. In them, we meet many figures well known to us from the New Testament. Some of his writings provide direct commentary on New Testament references.”  J.D. Douglas, ed., The New Bible Dictionary.
  5. Literary Consistency.  The Bible contains 66 books written over 1,500 years by 40 different writers but it tells one "big story" of God's plan of salvation that culminated in Jesus Christ.  You can't even pass a secret around a circle of 12 people and get the same message at the end. “There is indeed a wide variety of human authors and themes (in the Bible). Yet behind these…there lies a single divine author with a single unifying theme.” John R.W. Stott, Understanding the Bible.
  6. Prophetic Consistency.  There are over 300 specific prophecies in the Old Testament that are fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.  “The very dimension of the sheer fulfillment of prophecy of the Old Testament Scriptures should be enough to convince anyone that we are dealing with a supernatural piece of literature….God has himself planted within the scriptures an internal consistency that bears witness that this is his Word.” R.C. Sproul, Now That’s a Good Question.
  7. Expert Scrutiny. The early church had extremely high standards for what books were judged to be authentic and therefore included in the Bible. A book had to have been written by an Apostle or someone in their immediate circle, had to conform to basic Christian faith and had to be in widespread use among many churches. This was a careful process of “the people of God in many different places, coming to recognize what other believers elsewhere found to be true”; these writings were truly God’s word. G.J. Wenham, J.A. Motyer, D.A. Carson and R.T. France, The New Bible Commentary.
  8. Leader Acceptance.  A majority of the greatest leaders and thinkers in history have affirmed the truth and impact of the Bible"I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong.” Abraham Lincoln.
  9. Global Influence.  The Bible has had a greater influence on the laws, art, ethics, music and literature of world civilization than any other book in history.  Can you think of one that even comes close?  “Christianity”, as set forth in the Bible “is responsible for a disproportionately large number of the humanitarian advances in the history of civilization—in education, medicine, law, the fine arts, working for human rights and even in the natural sciences….” Craig L. Blomberg, in Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for Biblical Faith.
  10. Changed Lives.  From St. Augustine to Martin Luther to Joni Eareckson Tada to countless everyday men, women and children, the words of the Bible have transformed lives unmistakably and forever.  “As unnamed masses of Christians down through the ages have shown us, the Bible is the most reliable place to turn for finding the key to a life of love and good works.” T.M. Moore, The Case for the Bible.
I hope this list helps you become more confident about the Bible.  But don’t forget: whenever you have an opportunity to defend God's Word, be sure to “speak the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15).  No one listens to an angry Bible reader.  (If I missed any reasons that are important to you, please add them in the comment section below.  I'd love to hear from you.)

and humans are a selfcentered creature, not always seeing the true motives of their hearts. The scriptures go against basic human behavior in many ways...just one more proof these writings are inspired by a higher power and could not come from man.

Exlellent reasons. I have used Scripture Union devotions for years. I currently download it to my Kindle and thoroughly apprecate and enjoy the comments of great commentators.

All great reasons to recognise the Bible as God's inspired (means God-breathed) message to the Adam's descendants.

Another reason to have faith in the literal integrity of the Bible is the way YHWH (translated in English Bibles as The LORD) laced it together: There are wonderful rewards for the diligent Bible student, such as the mathematical properties of the whole book (FYI 'Bible' derives from the word Biblia meaning books).

Atheist Russian mathematician Ivan Panin was angry when his wife came into relationship with Christ, so he set out to prove the Bible to have no mathematical integrity. What he discovered made him become a Christ-follower himself. He's credited with being the discoverer of the heptadic (multiples of 7) nature of the Bible. He spewnt the rest of his life devoted to studying the Word of God and wrote many books on this over 50 years. Here's an example of his discoveries:

In the short genealogy of the Christ (Messiah in Hebrew, or redeemer in English) in Matthew 1, in the original Greek, there are (at least) 24 heptadic occurrences including:

    1. The number of words which are nouns is exactly 56, or 7 x 8.
    2. The Greek word "the" occurs most frequently in the passage: exactly 56 times, or 7 x 8.
    3. Also, the number of different forms in which the article "the" occurs is exactly 7.
    4. There are two main sections in the passage: verse 1-11 and 12-17. In the first main section, the number of Greek vocabulary words used is 49, or 7 x 7.
    5. Of these 49 words, The number of those beginning with a vowel is 28, or 7 x 4.
    6. The number of words beginning with a consonant is 21, or 7 x 3.
    7. The total number of letters in these 49 words is exactly 266, or 7 x 38-exactly.
    8. The numbers of vowels among these 266 letters is 140, or 7 x 20.
    9. The number of consonants is 126, or 7 x 18-exactly.
    10. Of these 49 words, the number of words which occur more than once is 35, or 7 x 5.
    11. The number of words occurring only once is 14, or 7 x2.
    12. The number of words which occur in only one form is exactly 42, or 7 x 6.
    13. The number of words appearing in more than one form is also 7.
    14. The number of 49 Greek vocabulary words which are nouns is 42, or 7 x 6.
    15. The number of words which are not nouns is 7.
    16. Of the nouns, 35 are proper names, or 7 x 5.
    17. These 35 nouns are used 63 times, or 7 x 9.
    18. The number of male names is 28, or 7 x 4.
    19. These male names occur 56 times or 7 x 8.
    20. The number of names which are not male is 7.
    21. Three women are mentioned-Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth. Three in Gematria speaks of the Messiah. The number of Greek letters in these three names is 14, or 7 x 2.
    22. The number of compound nouns is 7.
    23. The number of Greek letters in these 7 nouns is 49, or 7 x 7.
24Only one city is named in this passage, Babylon, which in Greek contains exactly 7 letters.

Here's a quick deductive argument for the truth of all the Bible teaches based on the resurrection:

    1. That Jesus of Nazareth was actually raised from the dead is as certain as anything in ancient history from an historical investigation based on facts accepted by the vast majority of scholars, whether they be Christian believers or skeptical unbelievers.

    2. Scholars agree that Jesus predicted he would be raised from the dead by "God," and this would be his chief sign that he was an accredited prophet of God in terms of his teaching and acts.

    3. There is no natural explanation for a resurrection from the dead: that's just not something that happens in the course of nature. People die and stay dead. When one considers this and the truth of "2" above, it is clear that Jesus was raised from the dead supernaturally by "God." Only the creator and ruler of nature can do something like raise someone from the dead.

    4. Thus, it follows that the resurrection proves that God exists, and is specifically the God Jesus taught about and followed, the God Jesus prophesied would raise him from the dead.

    5. The God Jesus taught about and followed is the God revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament). In fact, Jesus took it for granted that what the Hebrew Scriptures revealed and taught is true without any errors.

    6. Thus God, in accrediting Jesus by raising him from the dead, has told us that the Old Testament is true, for he has accredited that what Jesus taught is true. And, as we have seen from "5," Jesus taught that the Old Testament is true.

    7. Jesus also promised that God would further reveal himself through apostles that Jesus selected. Among other things, these apostles (or their close companions) wrote the New Testament.

    8. Thus God, in accrediting Jesus by raising him from the dead, has told us that the New Testament is true, for he has accredited that what Jesus taught is true. And, as we have seen from "5," Jesus taught that the New Testament would be the product of God speaking through the apostles.

    9. Therefore, by raising Jesus from the dead and thereby accrediting him as a prophet, God has shown us that he, God exists, that he is specifically the God revealed in the Old and New Testaments, and that all those Scriptures teach is true.

There are many other arguments for the existence of God and the truth of Jesus and the Bible. But this is a great, simple argument. And we find this kind of reasoning from miracles, including the resurrection of Jesus, in the Bible itself, so God has vouchsafed it to us as an effective argument.

From the Westminster Confession of Faith (I:5):

We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the Church to an high and reverend esteem of the Holy Scripture. (1 Tim. 3:15) And the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, the majesty of the style, the consent of all the parts, the scope of the whole (which is, to give all glory to God), the full discovery it makes of the only way of man’s salvation, the many other incomparable excellencies, and the entire perfection thereof, are arguments whereby it doth abundantly evidence itself to be the Word of God: yet notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth and divine authority thereof, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts. (1 John. 2:20, John 16:13–14, 1 Cor. 2:10–12, Isa. 59:21)

I love this post, thank you for sharing.

As a Christian who believes the Bible is true based on the work God has done in my life, I am often amazed at how much "real" evidence exists to show the Bible is true. You have outlined many of those reasons above.

And, the good news is that we are only learning more and more about why the Bible is true. Discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls is an example.

    Thanks for sharing.

I just want to say thank you for compiling this list! It is concise and very practical for use. I will use it in my ministry.

James...glad you find it helpful. I enjoyed working on it. Blessings.

  • June 9, 2013 at 9:54 AM

A very interesting list you've put together here!

#3 Eyewitness Accounts - I'm not sure how anyone can dispute this. Even in today's courts of law, an eyewitness account of a crime counts for something. These accounts along with #1, 2 and 4 from your list should be enough evidence for anyone to believe that the Bible is true.

  • June 11, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Michael...good point. And if you read the Gospels or Acts looking for eyewitness details, you realize just how much of it there is. That alone may not convince people, but with the other points from the list I think it's a pretty convincing case. Thanks for your comment.

  • June 17, 2013 at 2:22 PM

If you think about it jesus is technically a zombie. And im sorry to say that i am still not convinced with your evidence an example: uncle toms cabin a book that is entirely fictional converted so many northeners to be moraly against slavery that it changed the history of the United states. There are many historically reliable sources implying that such a thng could have happened but let me give you an example from the bibble in the new testament there is a part where jesus walks on water. Now take the most christian wholesome, and pure person you know and tell me can he walk on water? It has been proven through science using the formula for density that humans are simply to dense to ever be capable to do so. Another reason why the bible is false is because god helps people in the book, while in real lufe god has yet to help me over come my cancer or cure the world of aids or some other spiritual help.

  • June 17, 2013 at 7:14 PM

I just wanted to point out, It's scientifically impossible to have a child and to still be a virgin. And your argument to that is she connected with the holy spirit. So she had sex with a ghost? Spirits don't exist! Also how come the Bible says treat everyone with respect and love thy neighbour, yet discriminates homosexuality, people that don't have a choice about being gay and are still wrongly and cruelly discriminated by religious people. Does that sound loving? How can someone be raised from the dead? Because God did it? What was the point in Jesus dying in the first place? Also how come dinosaurs existed if we were meant to be the first creatures God created? You claim archaeology proves religion, well it also disproves it. Also what about natural selection and evolution? Genes? Do you believe in genes? Because that is how we are made up, through inheriting genes, not by God creating us! I would like to know your views on science and how the Bible is true when there is a lot and i mean A LOT of science that proves the Bible was a lie. I mean for a start it was made up by man, not even God himself, therefore it is a fictional story. It is like me believing Harry Potter is real!

  • June 18, 2013 at 6:28 AM

    Dear Yomamadud77,

Thanks for your input to the dialog. A few responses. First, I'm sorry you are struggling with cancer. Second, the Bible doesn't say anyone can walk on water, only that Jesus did. And my point is there is evidence to support that claim (eyewitnesses, etc.). Third, my suggestion is that you read the Gospel of John with an open mind and heart and then decide for yourself, "Who is Jesus?" God bless you.

  • June 18, 2013 at 6:37 AM

To my Anonymous Friend (who commented on June 17),

Thanks for your comments. My main response is that in my experience, many people who say that science contradicts the Bible haven't taken time to read the Bible for themselves. You sound very angry about the Bible, but have you read it? So I have the same suggestion for you as for another commenter: read the Gospel of John with an open mind and heart and then decide, "Who is Jesus?" God bless you.

Ok, so this is the conclusion I've come to,
a.) in Genesis when God created animals BEFORE man(thank you very much anonymous) he created Dinosaurs too, are they not animals as well?
b.) another proof that I have for God goes hand in hand with science, The 3 laws for cells, law 1 states that all cells can only come from other cells/ living things. So when Earth came to be, if there was no creator how did the first cell come into existence. Even if evoloution did exist it would a single cell, and once again cell law 1 indicates a living thing must have been present in order for something living to exist. Therefore that living thing/person was God.
    c.) yomamadud77
Im sorry that you are enduring cancer, however you cannot cancel out Gods existence because of that.

    John 16:33

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus even said that bad things will happen, he didnt sugar coat it like Buddha did. All this happened because we are living in a fallen world, until our Lord makes his 2nd coming, we shall prevail.
    God bless you all

A good place to start reading the NT are with the first words of the Mark gospel, if you are aware that all of the books, letters and gospels are written in the invariable, teaching, literary form of the parable. The Mark gospel is written as 31 consecutive parableStories. The first sets the stage for the second and so on. To receive a brief tutorial on this literary form go to the blog in wordpress whose user name is onlyinparables. Mike Carrell

An excellent summary of key reasons for accepting the Bible as a true and reliable account of God's redemptive plan and activities that culminate in the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank-you, Whitney.

  • August 1, 2013 at 1:41 AM

Not being hateful or anything, just curious. To the people who believe in the Bible, what are your views on evolution? Do you dismiss it completely, or do you accept some theories? Also, if you have come across other people with different religions who are as devout to their own religions as you are to your own, what are your thoughts on that? Do you believe that their stories are real as well, or are you against their different beliefs and faith? What do you think will become of them after death? Thanks to whomever kindly answers these questions.

In regards to the person above who talked about cell laws, I would just like to remind you that cells contain many particles, from phospholipids to acids to macro proteins that determine the functions of these cells. Throughout billions and millions of years, time allows single elements to bond and form these particles, including RNA and DNA that are the fundamental keys to reproduction, as they are able to replicate themselves through the help of specific proteins (enzymes). Only with these DNA/RNA does a cell actually have "life". If you understand what I've stated, and believe in it, but believe the driving force behind all this evolution is your God, not just time and mere chance, then I find that to be a just answer, but to create animals randomly and plop them on earth in a day seems a bit far stretched for me.

  • August 4, 2013 at 11:18 AM

You guys are wonderful! My sincerest sympathies to the person with cancer. I didnt read all the comments but decided to try to help a bit. The bible refers to the earth as an "orb" back when it was believed to be flat. It also talks about underwater geisers that were not even discovered till recent years. It even talks about the planets when all they could see at that time were stars. It was by several peoples induring faith that healed them. Even if u believe in the big bang.... something had to set it in motion. I have to jave a higher power. If i lost my hope it would destroy me. What would anyone have to loose by simply believing? The bible is a foolproof way live and coexist by. The reason that homosexuality is frowned upon is because it is an outright rebellion. But i love the sinner. I hate the sin. And there r other religions that all come down to 1 thing... a higher power and love. We will all learn right from wrong in due time. I love all of my brothers and sisters.

  • August 10, 2013 at 7:04 PM

All excellent reasons that prove the Bible is true and accurate. I am fascinated when archaeologists find ruins or artifacts that further prove the validity of the Bible. Good article.

  • August 11, 2013 at 7:19 AM

Hmmmm??? I too want for God to exist..BUT..Believers PLEASE get an education..The above reasons for Gods existence are flawed nonsense..Assumptions or down right lies unfortunately..When you read the bible think..Is this the actions/reactions of an all loving all knowing mercifull creator or does he act more like a human being would..
No one knows the bible better than your opposites.
They actually studied it & give you honest answers..
Google up the contradictions..absurdities & evil in the bible & see if you still think its the inafllible word of God..
Trying to link Jesus to the old testament is a big failure..
Josephuses evidence of Christ is a definite much later addition by christians to his works.
Check the nonsense about the virgin birth & the never happened roman sensus..
Did Nazareth even exist in Jesuses time..
The Jewish archaeologist(think my spellings correct) due to no evidence even said the whole story of the exodus is just that..a story..WHAT NO MOSES!!!..Jesus believed in Moses so was he confused too as a God. The bibles explicit as to where the Jews were & moved to..not a trace of some two million Jews anywhere..
    And theres lots more problems..
Please stop BLIND FAITH..I dont think even God expects that of us..
As for turning water into wine it would have been smarter to turn all wine into water & tell us how to make freaking wash our hands.
Now that would have helped us a lot more & saved a whole lot of lives & been better evidence of his powers..
    Thanks for reading

    Matt V,
I like how you make all believers sound like uneducated, dumb, backwoods, looneys. Lol. And people who are non believers are so wise and smart and educated lol.
Anyways, I think that the Bible will never be able to be proven to be 100% true and that's by God's design. What is faith if you can prove that it is true? Do people even know what faith is anymore?
You just have to make up your own mind. But let me share with you the seventeenth-century French philosopher, mathematician, and physicist, Blaise Pascal argument for God's existence know as Pascal's Wager. Basically, every human is involved in the game know as Life with only two possible bets to make and live by. The first is to bet on that God does exists so you live out your life accordingly and if you are wrong, you only loose small finite things such as pleasures, luxuries, etc. But if you are right and God does exist, There is here an infinity of an infinitely happy life to gain.
Same for those who choose to believe God does not exist. If you are right, then you don't loose anything and have enjoyed a life full of pleasures and self indulgences. But if you are wrong, you face an eternity of suffering.
It is up to everyone to decide how they want to bet their life's in this game of Life.

  • August 20, 2013 at 4:17 PM

Matt V, I find that the Old Testament has a lot to say about Christ. Isaiah 53, for example. The story of Abraham preparing to offer his one and only son as a sacrifice is to me about Christ. The Passover lamb whose blood protected the household from Gods' wrath speaks of Christ. If God exists then He is not a part of His creation and not subject to the scientific laws which He put into effect. If He created time and space yet is not a part of time and space, where do we mortals find Him. We find Him in the evidence He left us in His remarkable creation, mysteries that science has hardly begun to unravel or explain. We find Him in His Word which He requires to be approached with faith. Hebrews 11:6 "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him". For me one of the best evidences that the Bible is true is that it puts its finger on mans primary problem. Man can conceive of good, but cannot consistently achieve good. Man cannot live up to the standard God or even man has set, so the path to a relationship with our perfect and incomprehensible Creator is not in what we do, but in what we believe. I don't think the Bible can be believed apart from faith and the presence of Gods Holy Spirit. May you surrender to His power soon.

  • August 31, 2013 at 8:06 AM

To Dan's point, I have always said "Better to believe in God and discover he doesn't exist than to not believe and discover he does". I like the above comment that say "I love the sinner but hate the sin". How true. All one needs to do is get off the ground and look at our life today at 30,000 feet and you can clearly see how our world today has vastly higher levels of self guided views on our faiths and morals, crime is higher and more violent, the division of haves and have nots is greater; fueled of course in part by technology both in the execution of these things as much as the reporting of them, but one can clearly see our world is exponentially coming apart and eaves me no doubt that what is predicted yet still in the bible is moving true and will happen without a doubt. Those that would dispute that should be careful in their answers to absolutely and with 100% clarity and accuracy prove that the people of this world will eventually lead it to what is predicted as the end of times. Best of luck and may my God, the one true God, bless you today.

  • September 3, 2013 at 10:34 AM

You're all dangerously insane. Religion is the true evil in this world. Always has been. Life is finite. The inevitably of death makes me live.

  • September 8, 2013 at 8:31 AM

EscapedCatholic... while hilarious, your comment was mean. I didn't call you any names. All we were trying to do was help you cause God knows it's difficult enough for a believer to maintain a powerful enough mind in having faith for something you can't see, hear, or feel. It's so hard to keep up in this life with dedication, perseverance, motivation, endless research, and the ultimate cognition and free open mindedness to see beyond this world to a place where the words "impossible" and "retarded" do not exist where normally they would be used as a bar to keep one from experiencing peace when others cannot see it. And I whole heartedly agree with you... in that, I read a joke about how aliens came to this earth and said there was no intelligent life anywhere and people were at war over whose religion was more peaceful. I laughed till I cried. So true. A soldier went overseas and proclaimed that the Quran is much like the Holy bible. So why war? They can't even read it. They just do what they are told.... much like most people here huh????

  • September 25, 2013 at 3:45 PM

All of the sources are biased. There is no geographical evidence of world wide flooding in the same time period, certain areas did have floods but all in different time periods with scientific explanations to why they happened. The only reason people don't question the bible is because it says that you're not allowed to. Most religious people are indoctrinated into whatever religion they are part of and when they can think for themselves they only cling more to their religion when it is being ripped away from them.

  • September 27, 2013 at 11:22 AM

Actually, September 25, 2013 Anonymous, the Bible does say to seek out the truth and commends those who search the Scriptures.
To everyone else, yes, Christians are biased. But, so are atheists. To say atheists are not biased is to submit to blatant hypocrisy.
The above reasons do NOT prove the Bible is true. It is called CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE that lends itself to the possibility--read:reality--that the Bible is a credible source of information about history, science, God, salvation, and morality.
Someone above questioned the existence of Nazareth, but yes, it has been discovered by archaeologists. It was an insignificant town, which lends credence to Nathaniel's statement, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
Back to Anonymous September 25, people cling to their religions, yes. Atheists cling to their religion because it frees them from all moral obligations but those which they choose for themselves. After all, if there is no higher authority, whom must we submit to?
As for evolution, you do realize that Darwin concocted that hypothesis from the fantasies of his mind, don't you? He saw things, strange things, that he did not have a scientific explanation for--Galapagos mockingbirds, anyone?--and came up with a "What if" hypothesis for which there is no concrete proof. His work is better attributed to a philosopher.
Great scientists in history have believed in God, such as Blaise Pascal, Sir Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton--although, sadly, Newton did not believe in Christ--Matthew Maury--who found ocean currents after reading in his BIBLE about the "paths in the seas," --and others. However, we should not believe something just because influential or "brilliant" people do.
Lastly, facts about the credibility of the Bible alone will not always sway people's minds--although there have been some who have set out to disprove the Bible and ended up believing it--. Our testimonies to God's power to transform lives will, for some, be the ultimate verdict.
P.S. Do not be offended if atheists look down upon your intellect. It is a ploy I have heard my younger--read: little-- siblings use before. It is an ancient tactic: assume intellectual superiority and the opponent will back down. Search out the facts, and see if you can truly be as "unbiased" as atheists CLAIM they are.

I have some Questions for anyone who can answer them. i am not trying to be a smart guy or sarcastic..I am just confused. Why do Christians deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours?? Why do Christians laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God?? Why do Christians laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky?? Why do Christians believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs -- though excluding those in all rival sects - will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."?? When Christians hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees, why is that?? please someone try and answer these.

I'm confused with the statement about eye witness accounts. If you don't have an eyewitness present to question and verify or by all means disprove these claims than how can you be certain that the stories are not fictitious? Also, to the person who said about cell laws and to just finish off on what anonymous said on the 1st August, the cells you talk of are eukaryotic cells. Eukayotes were created from prokaryotic cells, these being bacteria cella -google "endosymbiosis". I would be a whole lot more accepting of the bible had it stated that no later than the fourth day, god created bacteria.

"God's plan" is the way that Christians traditionally explain things like amputations, cancer, hurricanes and car accidents. For example, if a Christian dies a painful and tragic death because of cancer, she dies as part of God's plan. Her death has a purpose. God called her home for a reason. Even if something bad happens to a Christian, it is actually good because it is part of God's plan.
You can see how pervasive "God's plan" is by looking in Christian inspirational literature. For example, if we look in the book A Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, we find this remarkable paragraph in Chapter 2:

Because God made you for a reason, he also decided when you would be born and how long you would live. He planned the days of your life in advance, choosing the exact time of your birth and death. The Bible says, "You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe. Every day was recorded in your book!" [Psalm 139:16]
Take a moment and think about what Rick Warren said. Rick said, "He planned the days of your life in advance, choosing the exact time of your birth and death." Let's examine one simple implication of this statement. What this means is that God has pre-planned every abortion that has taken place on our planet.

If the concept of "God's plan" is true, you can first of all see that God wants us to be aborting children. Every single abortion is planned by God, so God must be doing it for a reason. Second, you can see that both the mother who requests the abortion and the doctor who performs it are blameless. Since it is God who planned the abortion of the child (God chose the "exact time" of the death, according to Rick Warren), the mother and doctor are simply puppets who are fulfilling God's plan, are they not? What about all the Christians who are fighting against abortion? If abortion is part of God's plan, why are they fighting it? God is the all-powerful ruler of the universe, and his plan is for more than a million children a year to die in the United States through abortion. [ref] If God's plan is true, then each one of those abortions was meticulously planned by God.

If you are searching for the truth about God and His plan for mankind, where should you look? What is the only trustworthy source to find God's truth? Would it be creed books, Bible commentaries and a variety of other written works of men?

Jeremiah 30:1-2 This word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 2 "Thus says the Lord, saying, the God of Israel, 'Write all the words which I have spoken to you in a book.

The Lord did not tell Jeremiah to check with Billy Graham, Joesph Smith Jr., Gandhi or Saint Augustine and write down their words.

Exodus 24:3-4 Then Moses came and recounted to the people all the words of the Lord and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice and said, "All the words which the Lord has spoken we will do!" 4 Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord.......

Moses did not write down everything that John Wesley, Brigham Young, and Buddha had said.

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God!"

Jesus said live by every word that comes from God. He did say say live by every word that comes from Pope Benedict XVI, Martin Luther, and Jerry Falwell.

Luke 10:25-26 And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying. "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life ?" 26 And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?"

Jesus did not answer the lawyer by asking him "how does what is written by Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa and Benny Hin read to you?"

Acts 17:2-3 And according to Paul's custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from Scriptures, explaining and giving evidence that Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ."

The apostle Paul did not reason from the writings of Max Lucado, Pope John Paul II and John Calvin.

John 20:30-31 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

The writings of John McAthur, Jack Van Impe, Bill Hybels and Charles Swindoll were not written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ.

2 Peter 3:15-16 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do the rest of the Scriptures...

Peter said Paul's letters were by wisdom from God. Paul's letters were Scriptures.

Where does Peter say creed books, catechisms, Bible commentaries, books about the Bible, and other writings of men are Scriptures?

The charge that the Bible is nothing more than a fairy tale or a book of nice stories is not new. The Bible is undoubtedly the most impactful book the world has ever known, transforming innumerable lives. Why, then, would the question whether or not the Bible is a fairy tale be a legitimate one in the hearts of many around the world?

From the book of Genesis to the book of Revelation, we read the story of God’s eternal design to redeem a fallen world. With God as its inspiring Author, the Bible is the world’s greatest work of literature, and throughout the ages multitudes have spent their lives proclaiming its truth. Many, in fact, have made the ultimate sacrifice so that others may simply hold in their hands a copy of its pages. Nevertheless, there has never been a book that has been as viciously attacked as the Bible. The Bible has been banned, burned, mocked, ridiculed and defamed. Many have been put to death for simply possessing a Bible. But still the idea that the Bible is a fairy tale persists.

  • November 5, 2013 at 12:59 PM

The “prince of this world” has been blinding people to the truth since the beginning of time. He began his “work” on earth by calling God’s words into question (Genesis 3:1-5), and he has been doing so ever since. Everywhere we look, false teaching is rampant—on television and radio, in books and magazines, in our schools and universities, and sadly, even in our churches and Christian colleges, the very places where the truth of God’s Word should most vigorously be defended. When children are taught that our ancestors crawled out of the ocean eons ago, have we not relegated creation and Adam and Eve to fairy tale status? It’s the same thing when scientists and academicians tell us we are wasting our time searching for the “mythological” Noah’s Ark.

In fact, when many in the church, in order to placate the academic world, allow for a reinterpretation of the book of Genesis to accommodate modern evolutionary thought, the message sent to the world is that the Bible, apparently, means something other than what its simple, ordinary words convey. When the supernatural events of the Bible are dubbed as allegory by naturalists, it is understandable how those who have never studied the Bible can be confused as to its truth. For those who have never availed themselves of the truth of God’s Word, how likely are they to believe in a talking donkey or a fish swallowing a man and spitting him out on the shore or a woman turning into a pillar of salt?

  • November 5, 2013 at 12:59 PM

However, the Bible is most assuredly not a fairy tale. In fact, the Bible was “God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16), and this essentially means God wrote it. Its human authors wrote from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). That’s why this divinely woven text of nearly three quarters of a million words is perfect in harmony from start to finish and contains no contradictions, even though its sixty-six books have forty different authors from different walks of life, written in three different languages and taking nearly sixteen centuries to complete. How possibly could we have this amazing congruity if it wasn’t for God guiding the authors’ hands? We could not; it’s that simple. A righteous God would never inspire error. A just God would not call error-filled Scripture “holy and true.” A merciful God would not state that His Word is perfect if it were not, and an omniscient God could write it so that it is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.

Time and again, the historicity of the Bible has been confirmed by biology, geology, and astronomy. And although the Bible may not always agree with naturalistic hypotheses, it is not in conflict with any true, established scientific facts. In archaeology, the last one hundred years have brought to light a treasure trove of biblical truths that scholars have questioned or doubted for centuries, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the basalt stone containing the “House of David” inscription, a 7th century BC amulet scroll bearing the name of God, and a stone bearing the name and title of Pontius Pilate, the Judean governor who ordered the execution of Jesus Christ. The Bible is without doubt the best documented book from the ancient world, with more than 24,000 whole or partial biblical manuscripts in existence. No other document of antiquity has nearly as much evidence to confirm its reliability.

  • November 5, 2013 at 1:00 PM

Another attestation to the Bible’s divine authorship is the vast number of detailed biblical prophecies that have come true exactly as foretold. We see the psalmist, for example, telling of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ nearly a thousand years before it occurred (Psalm 22), and hundreds of years before crucifixion was even invented! Simply put, it would be impossible for human beings to have seen so far into the future with such precision and accuracy hundreds of times. Indeed, it would be completely illogical to believe these proven prophecies are anything other than the work of God. Incidentally, and amazingly, probability experts tell us the mathematical odds of just forty-eight prophecies regarding one person (i.e. Christ) coming true as foretold are one in ten to the 157th power!

But the greatest proof that the Bible is not a fairy tale is the countless number of lives that have been transformed by the truths contained in its pages. Used by the Spirit of God, the holy truths of the Bible have turned millions of sinners into saints. Drug addicts have been cured by it, homosexuals set free by it, derelicts and deadbeats transformed by it, hardened criminals reformed by it, sinners rebuked by it, and hate turned to love by it. No amount of reading “Cinderella” or “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” can effect such change on the soul of man. The Bible does possess a dynamic and transforming power that is only possible because it is truly God’s Word.

In light of the foregoing, the greater question, then, is how could someone not believe in these convincing, God-breathed, error-free, life-transforming truths? Unfortunately, the answer is actually an easy one. God has said that if we do not open your hearts to Him, He will not open our eyes to the truth. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would teach us (John 14:26) and guide us into truth (John 16:13). And the truth of God is found in the Word of God (John 17:17). Thus, to those who believe, these sacred words are life itself, but, to those without the Spirit, the Bible is nothing but foolishness (1 Corinthians 2:14).

If the Bible is true then
    1) slavery is right,
    2) Poligamy is ok
    3) Snakes *can* talk
    4) Unicorns are real
    5) demon possesion( instead of chemical inbalances) are true
    6) God has no mercy Deuteronomy 7:2
    7) an everlasting place of pain and agony for the majority of humankind

plus I wonder what was God's intent here? Isaiah 13:15-18, Jeremiah 15:1-4, Mark 9:43-48 Ezekiel 9:5-7

  • November 17, 2013 at 11:47 PM

The issue is that many of the texts weren't written by who it is claimed. Our were written nearly 100 years after the event.

Here's a thought experiment, in a court of law, ask Matthew, Mark, Luke and John what Jesus' last words on the cross were. you won't get a consistent answer.

  • November 18, 2013 at 1:27 AM

I find that the very fact that all the sources cited in that list were all from other Christian sources with no actual scientific source cited. I cannot take anything that was said in this article as truth or even fact based since it being completely biased towards your point of view. Everything on that list would not stand up to any true scientific scrutiny.

  • November 18, 2013 at 1:42 AM

Only believers of this myth will accept that it is true. No True Christian would dare actually research the claims tat this guy makes in his 10 things list. If any did they would soon see the lies used to sell this book. And as one who has actually looked into these stories, all this Whitney T. Kuniholm is doing is repeating the standard apologetic that all of these wannabe authors use. He has nothing new to add to the discussion.

I would suggest to those reading this column, to find all the "negative" comments about his work and go and check to see if what is claimed in those negative comments are true or not. You will be most surprised at what you find.

  • November 18, 2013 at 7:19 PM

    ok lets start
    reason 1
there are Hundreds of inconsistencies in the bible alone
let alone in different versions of that fable
yea but the books about Plato, Aristotle and Socrates are read in more detail then the bible.
textbook case of a argument of majority.
when so many people believe it then it must be true.
    reason 2
to quote matt dillahunty, if you know new York exists does that prove there is a spiderman.
its not that when a few things in it are correct that the whole thing is correct.
    reason 3
sorry but most of the story's in the bible are hearsay
try reading this site for some idea how messed up it is

    reason 4
Josephus was indeed a historian but its a weak argument at best that he confirms the bible.
    reason 5
the bible is such a messed up collection of made up and despicable story's that if god really was the dictator of the story then he either is seriously messed up or god needs to articulate better.
    reason 6
the over 300 specific prophecies in the Old Testament that are fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the New Testament are all non proven, pasted in after the facts, nitpicking over details, twisting meanings of words. and it still does not make sense
    reason 7
expert scrutiny, lol, then why are there so many contradictions in the bible.
    here a few examples
Is it folly to be wise or not?

PRO 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

ECC 1:18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

1CO 1:19: "For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."

    The sins of the father

ISA 14:21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.

DEU 24:16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
    reason 8
argument from authority, like your boss is always' right
    reason 9
nope indoctrinating, brainwashing and keeping the masses dumb and ignorant that is the way of religion
nope, the religious way is praying to get better
making loopholes to keep lawsuits at bay, it would be a nice gesture of the church if they extradited the previous pope to stand trail for his involvement in the cover up of pedophile priest scandals
    the fine arts,
yea tons of religious art because they have the money to buy it, whatever happened to give to the poor and starving.
working for human rights and even in the natural sciences…
the finer points of slavery in the bible and Creationism, enough said.
    reason 10
yea an easy convenient lie instead of a difficult and sometimes confusing truth.

try looking at it this way
on a universal scale are our lives les then insignificant, a near fraction of a second on the universal clock.
but that is what makes it so special.
that mere split second that one exists.
live a life of a explorer, expand your horizon, have an open mind, explore your fantasy but don't get lost in it
the real world is often more wondrous then fiction.
basically try to enjoy the life you have because its the only one you are sure of that you have.
but also be fair, if i want to enjoy my life i must also allow others to enjoy their life.

  • November 28, 2013 at 11:15 AM

In response to anonymous regarding your list of "contradictions"

  • December 10, 2013 at 5:08 PM

You can try to be wise and special all you like, but you are a mortal human and will die. The bible says there is an afterlife, atheists disagree but they're just human thinking human and discovering things that humans can understand on this planet. Say there is a God and He created all, how many statements made by science would be false? I cannot trust humans, all my life they let me down, doctors, professors etc, they try to be wise and proud but they make so many mistakes because they are just mortal humans. Now people in the bible are also just humans not even scientist, mostly humble people not trying to know it all, but God worked with them and even told them in the last days people will mock and say "where is your God" and one religion and in my opinion it is evolution, not a religion but the people believe in it making it a "religion" created by humans. I dont care what people believe in, its a free world and if you want to be gay or serve satan or science or whatever it is your choice and I respect that. But I believe in the bible and if there is a God and you die, you will get judged and the wisdom you gained on earth wont save you then. Why cant you see God? If everyone saw God, why hope? Why trust? Where is free will then to make your own choices? He gave the bible, follow it or reject it as easy as that. He dont need to come down and prove himself to you... he is a superior being, you are like dust on a very small planet somewhere in the universe He created, His propery, He is the boss, you cannot order him around and not even if you dont even believe.. Live your +\- 70 years and make your choices. I believe heaven and hell is real, but mortals wont know until death, little thing to seperate your 70years to give you the end result of your choices. But believe what you want. I dont want to push anyone into christianity, im making a statement just like the atheist and scientists can make mocking statements against my God. Science is good but I do not agree with evolution and big band theories.

  • December 12, 2013 at 10:32 PM

The Bible does speak of dinosaurs, they were referred to as Behemoths. It also doesn't discriminate against gays, rather, of states that we should have compassion for one bretheran. Throughout human history we have NEVER seen evolution take place in a large scale.

  • December 14, 2013 at 7:48 AM

Thanks to everyone for a vigorous, passionate debate. I can't say I agree with every comment, but obviously this post struck a nerve. My challenge to anyone who claims the Bible is not true is this: read the Gospel of John then ask yourself, "What does this teach me about God?" And let me reveal my agenda. My prayer for those who oppose the Bible is that by honestly reading it they will realize just how much its Author loves them. That changes everything.

  • December 19, 2013 at 6:44 AM

I feel compassion for anyone who has endured judgement on this earth by those who could be labeled as Christians. The biggest problem with Christianity is the fact that all Christians are sinners and fallen people. If the proof you provide for any religion is the quality of it's believers then here on this earth there can be no true religion. I have always found great refreshment in focusing on the "highest form" of Christianity: the life of Christ. I am not an apologetics genius or even someone who I would consider super spiritual. I just know that if you seek to find fault you will find, if you seek to find sin you will find it. The best "faith proof" I know of is that the Bible is the only true example of unconditional, undeserved mercy and sacrificial love in which the patron (for lack of a better word) sacrificed and willingly died for the lowest, meanest of beggars. I would proudly stand Jesus and his life up against any other in human existence as "proof" for the Love that is the standard of my faith.

God's love is there for you all, accept it as you will. It is freely offered

  • December 20, 2013 at 11:53 AM

The Bible is completely and utterly false.

  • December 22, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Why does it matter whether or not the Bible is true? Christians understand that the Bible is not valued for it's validity but with the stories it tells. The stories themselves explore the human condition, what it means to be a good person, and doing what is right in the face of persecution. The passages are so full of metaphors and morals that I'm sure scholars will be arguing over their meaning for a very long time.
Do we disregard stories of fiction just because they aren't true? No, their morals are taken to heart regardless actual events. The same can be said for the Bible.
I do not understand this obsession many Christians have with trying to prove that the events of the Bible actually happened. It does not matter. The validity of the Bible does not undermine your validity as a Christian. Or does the Bible mean so much to you that it must be 100% true for you to function? Faith is only a small part of what it means to be Christian. How you live your everyday life, how you treat others, how you treat yourself; that is what matters.

None of the auggestions that you have demonstrated identify the truth behind the Bible. In fact acceptance of many of the points including point 6 require presupposing that the Bible is already accurate and valid.

An argument doesnt simply make sense because one first believe it makes sense.

I would like to say one thing to all,why did the church brake all of there 10 sacred rules of life to push christianity on the world. All of those poor people that were killed in history for not taking the so called lord jesus christ as there savior, that is the reason I found this site tonite,I believe in a god called odin, and that's why they came up with the bible back in the day to snuff out good free thinking people!and guess what slowly but shirley people like me are waking up and seeing the old ways grab ourr hearts and minds back,in the bible it says there wiill be the end,yes there will be for the bible!

My suggestion to any free thinking person is this: just read the Bible and then form an opinion. As I've said in other responses, try reading the gospel of John. The intellectually honest thing to do is read it yourself before coming to a conclusion.

If God is not real, then how do you explain music? Certain frequencies together (notes) make a chord which has a pleasent sound. Why are the principles of music always valid? Even animals recognize music (whale songs). Why do certain notes together sound pleasent and other notes together sound badly? Because music is a gift from God! Also, did you know that Darwin once said "...I remember well the time when the thought of the eye made me cold all over, but I have got over this stage of the complaint, and now small trifling particulars of structure often make me feel uncomfortable. The sight of a feather in a peacock's tail, whenever I gaze at it, makes me sick!"" Why? Because of the order involved. It is obvious the the peacocks feathers came to be by intelligent design. For anyone to suggest that eye on a peacocks feather "just happened" by evolution is insane. It is obvious that divine creation was involved. Think people! Think!

  • January 28, 2014 at 3:24 PM

Many of these "contradictions" being referred to are actually not contradictions at all. I appreciate an educated debate, but it is simply untrue to list contradictions that are not contradictions at all but are being taken out of context. I do not condone Christian apologetics taking biblical truths out of context to promote Christianity so I will not stand for attackers of the bible doing the same.

  • January 29, 2014 at 4:19 PM

Each of us requires a different set of facts to conclude that there is a God. For some, it simply could be nature and its beauty, for others the complexity of the human body and for me it is science. Just take earth for example and its proximity to the sun. If the sun was 1" closer or 1" further away the earth would either freeze or melt.
I hope everyone can experience God while here on earth. Whether you believe in him or not, there still is God and whether you see him as nothing, he still is King. He doesnt become what we think him as and he does not disappear if we do not believe in him at all. The bible is so amazing, a book that can be read and understood as a child and a book that can capture and challenge the minds of the most sophisticated Greek and Hebrew professors. God will reveal himself to everyone I just hope that we learned from Isreal and our Heart lines up with our speech and we dont just say we desire Christ but that we live the desire out through obedience to his commands. Faith, Hope and Love, "and the greatest of these is love"....

i think this contradicts number 9 Christianity borrowed its central myths and ceremonies from other ancient religions. The ancient world was rife with tales of virgin births, miracle-working saviors, tripartite gods, gods taking human form, gods arising from the dead, heavens and hells, and days of judgment. In addition to the myths, many of the ceremonies of ancient religions also match those of that syncretic latecomer, Christianity. To cite but one example (there are many others), consider Mithraism, a Persian religion predating Christianity by centuries. Mithra, the savior of the Mithraic religion and a god who took human form, was born of a virgin; he belonged to the holy trinity and was a link between heaven and Earth; and he ascended into heaven after his death. His followers believed in heaven and hell, looked forward to a day of judgment, and referred to Mithra as "the Light of the World." They also practiced baptism (for purification purposes) and ritual cannibalism—the eating of bread and the drinking of wine to symbolize the eating and drinking of the god’s body and blood. Given all this, Mithra's birthday should come as no surprise: December 25th; this event was, of course, celebrated by Mithra’s followers at midnight.

Mithraism is but the most striking example of the appearance of these myths and ceremonies prior to the advent of Christianity. They appear—in more scattered form—in many other pre-Christian religions.

also more reasons that the bible is fake not God but the bible we as men hath created
The Bible, Christianity's basic text, is riddled with contradictions. There are a number of glaring contradictions in the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments, and including some within the same books. A few examples:

". . . God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man."
"And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham."
    (Genesis 22:1)

". . . for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger forever."
    (Jeremiah 3:12)
"Ye have kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn forever. Thus saith the Lord."
    (Jeremiah 17:4)

"If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true."
    (John 5:31, J.C. speaking)
"I am one that bear witness of myself . . ."
    (John 8:18, J.C. speaking)

    and last but not least:

"I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."
    (Genesis 32:30)
"No man hath seen God at any time."
    (John 1:18)
"And I [God] will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts . . ."
    (Exodus 33:23)

Lets face it, even if you received a clear explanation of what you call "contradictions" listed above, you still would not believe. Faith in God and belief in the bible requires us to change(repentence), and honestly, thats what most people who do not embrace Christianity have a problem with. In all my years, I have never seen anyone argued into the kingdom of heaven...

    1 Corinthians 1:25
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

on the contrary I did believe before I started noticing loopholes in the bible and I do believe in God and I do believe there is a true bible but the kjv is corrupted. think like this the original bible has been passed down through generations and has been translated multiple times whose to say that they translated wrongly and corrupted the bible. I do believe IN GOD but I DO NOT BELIEVE IN MAN. who knows. I sure don't and if you would please enlighten me. I personally Love God and I have no regret in him but his sacred book has been left to the trifles of man to undignified so there you have it. point blank simple I will follow my heart and believe what it says unto me.

  • January 30, 2014 at 8:39 PM

If all I had to lead me was my heart, I would probably find myself in a whole lot of trouble:)) I enjoy hearing and listening to people express there heart and mind, so thanks for responding and it does make me happy that, not only do you believe in God, but that you love him also. As for scripture, I sure hope God had a hand in preserving his word through man because I spend about 2hrs a day listening to it and reading it. I do not get caught up in which translation is most accurate. I use ESV study bible to read, I listen to KJV(Alexander Scorby), I got saved with the NIV and I can most closely relate to the NLT. Do you think God is disappointed in the preservation of his word? Which bible is "true"? Do you think God has the ability to preserve his word through man? Anyway, have a great weekend my friend. Oh, one more question, Do you attend church?

  • January 31, 2014 at 11:53 AM

Sometimes a person says - help me. And you say - do this.
    and they do't do it.
Such people are liars to others - and to themselves.

Scientifically accurate statements on the Scriptures which pre-dated man's ability to have discovered those truths for himself. Spericity of Earth, hydroligical cycle. an existance of an atmosphere, The Lord's understanding of the digestive process, are just a few concept which the bible reveals which predated man's ability to discover these truths for himself

The internal consistency of Scripture. The consistency of Angelic behavior. Throughout the Scriptures, we see a consistency of angelic behavior which the human authors of Scripture would not have corroberated on to maintain.

The Authors of Scripture record for us, most unwittingly, A consistent, Angelic frame of reference, A consistency which could not have been conspired, but a consistency we discover today looking back on those writing. As we study in Scripture the conduct of Angels, We begin to discover that their frame of reference is quite different from that of God or a person.

    1. Angels react to the countenance of God the Father

    Matt. 18:10
Revelation 16:5-6. In this context we actually see the angels encouraging God who is commanding that His wrath be poured out. It is because God, who is full of mercy, does not enjoy what he is about to do and the angels can see it upon his face.

    2. Unlike God, Angels stand ready to execute justice upon the wicked with no compunction whatsover.
    Revelation 16
    Revelation 21:9

    3. Angels are messengers to Gods elect and treat them kindly but feel no sympathy towards the plight of the wicked.

Matthew 28:4 And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.
Matthew 28:5 But the angel answered and said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
Matthew 28:6 "He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Revelation 21:9 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, "Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb's wife."

Notice how in both of the above examples the angels are showing kindness towards God’s own but complete ambivalence towards those having no relationship to God.

    4. Angels do not have as part of their frame of reference, an understanding of the grace of redemption.

1 Peter 1:12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven -- things which angels desire to look into.

Acts 10:3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius!"
Acts 10:4 And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, "What is it, lord?" So he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.
Acts 10:5 "Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter.

Why didn’t the angel visiting Cornelius just present the Gospel toward Cornelius? Because angels are not entrusted with that information. We never see angels in the Scriptures dispensing Gospel information. Did the authors of Scripture think to preserve this nuance concerning angels in the Scriptures? Or does this fact demonstrate the inspiration of Scripture? Scripture speak with remarkable consistency concerning issues of relative unimportance.

  • February 19, 2014 at 8:06 PM

I guess it depends on which angels you are refering to, obviously not the fallen ones.

    1.Hebrews 13:2
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
The Gospel has been given to earths inhabitants, so of course they are not entrusted with it, its our responsibility to spread the good news...

The biggest proof that the bible is truth (aside from the mass amount of prophetic scripture that has come to pass and the lack of any prophetic scripture that has failed to come to pass - besides those dealing with Jesus' second coming) would be the unbelievable amount of energy spent trying to extinguish and discredit scripture.

Think about it. If the Bible was not true then big deal, what harm does it present? Absolutely none, it convicts people to treat others very well. So your neighbor believes and LIVES BY the Bible, nice, chances are he won't be the one breaking into your house, hitting on your wife, telling lies about you, killing your family members, throwing wild parties with loud music late into the night, etc. Then why do people spend so much energy trying to eliminate and discredit the Bible? Because it convicts them of their unjust behavior and they love their unjust behavior and don't want to be told it is unjust because that hurts their feelings. So they spend all this energy to find all the unjust things people CLAIMING to be following the Bible are doing or have done and say see - hypocrites! the Bible changes nothing. Or they fill pages of books with inconsistencies in Bible text and say, see - you can't trust this book. Why such a strong response against the Bible? Read the book, The Great Controversy and you will discover this reason in great detail. This controversy will only continue to get worse through out time until it becomes so unbearable that ..., then Jesus will come - just as it was in the days of Noah.

Back to the 100% fulfillment of prophetic scripture (excluding those around the 2nd coming). Something like one third of the bible, 600+/- prophetic scriptures have come true. Ask yourself, if my friend started giving me stock market tips and everyone (100%) came true, how many tips would you need to see come true before you started investing your hard earned money into his stock tips? I am quite sure it would be a whole lot less than 600. But 600 right guesses about the future with 100% accuracy doesn't convince you that the Bible is true? There has got to be a higher power at work to cause one to reason that way! Read The Great Controversy. I hope you have a nice eternity.

Nope. The OT clearly states that homosexuals should be stoned to death.

  • March 26, 2014 at 5:42 PM

People on both sides can make many arguments, but the Bible was written so long ago that there's really no way to totally prove that it is true or not. There are many questions that are not being asked that would reveal many holes in the list above. Most people that WANT to believe are not going to very motivated to keep asking those questions. Doubts are a good and useful tool for getting to the truth, and what is REALLY true will always stand unaffected by someone's doubts. I encourage everyone to keep searching for truths, avoid snap-judgements, don't jump to conclusions, don't just blindly follow the people around you, and don't just do whatever feels right. Put in the effort. Either way, you'll be glad you did.

For me, I like science because it's a school of thought that is self-correcting. It NEVER stops asking those questions. I'm not seeing that we live in a world with events that are truly supernatural. So I believe the Bible was just written by people only. However, I believe God may exist. I am a Deistic Agnostic and proud of it. I believe in Love Ethics. My religious beliefs are not unlike those of Thomas Jefferson. I find many like-minds among Spiritual Naturalists and Unitarian Universalists. Peace.

God made light and dark at the beginning, how it was possible, when he made sun and moon on 3rd day?

  • April 3, 2014 at 12:07 PM

The light in the beginning could be interpreted as light from other stars, but obviously it's no authority on cosmology. The 3rd day is only about 9.3 billion years off. And by the way folks, scientists can detect light that has been traveling for over 13 billion years.

If one were to believe the Bible "stories" then everyone in existence today is descended from Noah. I prefer to believe in the messages, therein lies the truth. There is but one commandment regardless of whom one believes is the creator. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." That equation would bring us peace.

First I would like to say that not just anyone can walk on water. Only jesus could walk on water because he is A.son of god and B.the only human to have never sjnnedJesus walked on water to save a ship in a storm. In order to prove it, he had someone walk to him. Next technically he is not a zombie. He defeated death and arose on the third day. Next, god won't help if you don't want to be helped. And clearly you don't want to be. If you want to, take the time to actually learn about Christ. Accept him in your heart and I'll be praying for you in the mean time

Hey you said Old testament.... after Jesus was born, in the new testament, he established a new view on all sin

  • April 11, 2014 at 4:51 PM

I have some questions. How can you continue to hold today's Bible as God's word (or "God's Breath"), when there are almost 15,000 noted differences from the oldest Bible in recorded history, to the Bible most commonly used today? Also, How can you continue to support today's Bible, when you know that man has changed, manipulated, and misinterpreted the Bible since its creation? Having Faith can explain the belief in God, but it would not explain why anyone would follow guidance that we know at the bare minimum was influenced by man. I believe there is a God, Christianity just reeks of man made hub bub. So my biggest question is, what outside of Faith makes you certain that your religion is the real one? Raised as a Christian, evolved into an agnostic.

  • April 12, 2014 at 5:24 PM

I really like the previous post. I would only add that I have serious doubts that there is anything supernatural in the world ... so I can only believe that the Bible was written by people alone. I too, am not saying there is no God. And almost all of 1 Cor 13 is dear to my heart.

  • April 16, 2014 at 10:10 AM

I cannot believe in 2014 there are still people who actually believe in the bible as literal truth. You people are psychotic at best and should all be prevented from teaching a single bullshit word of this to your children.

  • April 16, 2014 at 5:35 PM

I have never read do much BS in a very long time.

So many of those points are misleading at best and others are just wrong.

Archeological evidence? really there is still debate if Sodom and Gamorah even existed....there is no evidence they ever did.

Collaberating accounts? There are only 4 documents that Christians regularly use to show that sources outside the Bible refer to Biblical events. There is speculation as to what those records are even refering too.

Prophetic Accuracy? It's easy to make something that has happened fit into the prophecy after it has already happened. Prophicies are easy to make happen...they are so vague and easy to interpret you can make it mean anything. That is why every generation of believers have thought themselves to be in the End Times.

Greater Influence on laws? That is a total lie. Most of the 10 Commandments are illegal in the Western world(and most of the rest to). Not killing/stealing/lying(Bearing false Witness) are laws that every culture and country have. Even before Christianity arose as a rebel Jewish Sect. If the Bible influenced our laws...we would be MURDERING people who are not Christian, working on the Sabbath, or commit adultery(and all those who have cheated on their spouses I know of have been Christians). It is illegal to beat disobediant children and last I checked Slavery is also illegal even though it is fully supported and allowed in the Bible.

Thankfully for the author the Internet has no rules stating you need to post truthful information.

If the Bible is true...where are these talking snakes, or when will the sun stay in one spot in the sky for a whole day again?

  • April 17, 2014 at 2:31 PM

I have read all your comments and cannot come to a conclusion , if you are a reborn Christian or not.
You have the knowledge of the Bible, very well too, but no faith or belief. You have the wisdom of the World and not the wisdom of God. I suggest you read again the N.T. with a new approach, say a little prayer to have the guidance of the H.S. and start reading again.
You probably don't even know that the Holy Spirit is God ( Holy Trinity) or you don't believe in that, at all.? Don't do the mistake of mixing science with The Word of God. They are two completely different things. Jesus said we have to be like children to enter into the Kingdom of God. Try to have faith and Belief and not Religion.
As for your last remark " about talking snakes and sun to stay in one spot in the sky" I am afraid you will be disappointed because in the Kingdom of Heaven or God there will be no sun, because his GLORY will be our LIGHT. No offence meant but just my point of view . thank you

Again, you mix scientist this time what he said /argued with the catholic church and he was a christian before he died. Good for him. But I am trying to tell you that what God wants really from a person is a personal relationship with Him, that's why He sacrificed His only Son for you and me.all you have to do is just accept this with all your heart and you life will
completely change. Somewhere in your comments you said you love God and yet you try to
prove His word fact you did not answer my question but tried to throw a new
thought you had that moment. No one obliges you not even God to follow Him by force. If
you really love God , you will eventually find Him. As I told you, we are fortunate to have the
H S in us ,but we have to listen to what He has to say...Did I feel a little annoyance in your reply or was it only my imagination?signed Ar

  • April 18, 2014 at 12:44 AM

There nothing here to mix science with except falsities based on wishful thinking and fear. My main argument is with thinking the Bible is not much more than myth. Some of the myth is beautiful, insightful, and inspirational ... until people say it's God's word. Then all the good parts get associated with this crazy talk about supernatural things that don't exist. You don't need the Bible to love life, love others, and have rich and fulfilling life filled with truth and goodness.

"What we need is not the will to believe, but the wish to find out, which is exactly the opposite." (Bertrand Russell) ... and that what science is about. The Universe is the book we read with science. If someone claims to love God, why wouldn't they want to learn all they can about the Universe through science? Science is a self-correcting process while ancient writings can never be proven.

  • April 18, 2014 at 6:31 AM

All these you are saying is again from the wisdom of the World.
You still avoid to answer any of my questions. It's your right , but I think you definitely are afraid to find the real God, but God loves you as you are and He will talk to you even if you are a stubborn person. Would you say Isaiah is a myth ? He knew the world was round . Look what it says in Isaiah Chapter 40 vs 22 It is he that sitteth upon the CIRCLE,,,, of the earth........" ( the circle )??! Who gave him that wisdom? My Greek Bible says" He is sitting on the round of the earth" . Anyway, God Bless you plenty and I'll pray that soon you have a personal visit from HIM , dear Anonymous. You are special for Him, and He will find you and use you when you humble yourself in front of Him and you will see that the knowledge you have does not count in front of God.Bless you again

    To Whitney T. Kuniholm

I came across to your page accidently and found your 10 points very interesting and helpful when talking to someone who either is not at all Christian or has just a Religion which is called Christianity.
These 10 points will be very helpful here in my country who are all “Christians “ without Christ. Unfortunately the Mother of our Lord is raised and praised more than our Lord in their Churches. I might as well tell you, that I live in Athens, Greece.
Unfortunately, 99% of the population is Orthodox Christians.
Somehow God talked to me from a Foreign Radio Station 13 years ago, and I started looking for a church.
And I found my present church “A Charismatic Church.”
    God works in marvelous ways.
Of course we are heretics for the Orthodox people but it doesn’t bother us at all.
God has used me with moslem people , and they have accepted Christ and have been baptized in our churches. It’s easier to speak to someone who has no Christian background at all , specially when you show them LOVE.
Thank you for giving me this chance to be able to write in your blog pages
God Bless you to carry on what you are doing!
    Thank you again

  • April 18, 2014 at 1:13 PM

Yes, what I am saying is wisdom from the world. It's not good or bad. It's all we have. I am not afraid to find the truth no matter what it is. That is the essence of science. Perhaps you are afraid to not find God and have jumped to conclusions about the Bible. Yes, Isaiah is a myth. The Bible is a large collection of books. Anyone can find many things that correspond to reality, and many things that don't. To say the Bible is the word of God is to believe that supernatural things happen in the world. I don't see any supernatural things happening, but I do see many tendencies of human nature that lead me to be decidedly skeptical. “If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things." - Descartes

  • April 18, 2014 at 2:17 PM

Man can not find God, but God seeks man. Rom 3: 1-12

  • April 18, 2014 at 2:50 PM

Wisdom of the World is not everything we have. There is supernatural things going on( we call it the Chrisma /Gift of the Lord) in this world and it’s given to those who have that special connection with the Creator, and deep faith.
It doesn’t matter if you are a mathematician or a scientist or doctor or whatever. The” supernatural power” is a gift given by the Creator through the HS when you ask for it. Read A vs 4-11.
The HS will lead you or stop you if you are wrong or, if it is not for you. Always listen to what the Creator says. Don’t hurry, but wait for a sign .He will give it . This is what faith is about. This is what obedience to the word Is about. This is what you receive when you STUDY the word of God , not just read.
You know a lot about science and maths., which surely you have achieved by reading and studying , or may be you are one. Good for you ! God wants scientists , doctors and he really blesses doctors who are doing their job conscientiously .
You can do the same with the Word of God, not try to find mistakes and contradictions, but try to find how the plan of God is working TODAY in our world.

PS .Do you mean that Isaiah ch. 53 is a MYTH?

  • April 19, 2014 at 1:08 PM

I was a Christian and studied the Bible for many years. If it helps you to live in clothed in myth, go for it. I am not afraid of the truth, I am patient enough for science to unfold it, and except what is currently unknowable.

I honestly don't understand you. May be I am ...simple minded! From what I understand you state that you are now living "simplistic lifestyle" while studying the Bible was a complicated challenge! What about all these Science knowledge you have? Did you wake up one morning and you had it all ? Or you spent night after night in front of your computer to acquire the knowledge? Is this the simplistic lifestyle of yours? And what does John 3:16 have to do with this?! And one more thing. You still think knowledge is power, only about the wrong thing.

God did not plan the abortions, he only had a foreknowledge of them. To say that God planned the abortions is like saying that God made man sin. The devil tempted Eve, and when Eve followed the serpent, the relationship between God and man was lost. God did not make Eve and Adam sin, he gave them a choice. Adam and Eve chose out of their own free will to do the only thing God instructed them not to do. If God made humans do exactly what he wanted, there would be no sin. However, God gave man a choice, and man chose to disobey. Therefore, God did not plan these abortions, but rather had a foreknowledge that they would happen.

  • May 8, 2014 at 10:20 PM

I would personally remove Reason #5 from this list, as it's sufficiently explained by Reason #7.

"The Bible contains 66 books written over 1,500 years by 40 different writers but it tells one 'big story' of God's plan of salvation that culminated in Jesus Christ."

"A book had to have been written by an Apostle or someone in their immediate circle, had to conform to basic Christian faith and had to be in widespread use among many churches."

By your own admission, the bible is remarkably consistent in its overall message due to the fact that contrary texts were selectively excluded at the time of its compilation.

  • May 10, 2014 at 9:53 PM

I would just like to mention. If you was God would you help someone who didn't believe you exist. Do you go to a strangers house. Expect nothing from someone who is nothing to you. You Godless people want a miracle. In the words of Jesus "there will be no sign from God to a wicked generation.

  • May 11, 2014 at 1:28 AM

Who made you judge of this or any generation? Christianity doesn't have a monopoly on ethics. Morals have naturalistic origins. There are many good people that are not Christian. Signs and miracles are a fantasy.

Deuteronomy 4:2 ye shall not add unto the word which I command you neither shall ye diminish aught from it that ye may keep the commandments of the lord your god! Now can someone that believes in the bible explain to me why this is not followed by any religious believers, worshipers or whatever yall call yourself? Why do the bible seem to be very similar to stories from greek mythology which was dated by physical evidence to take place 2nd century bc? Why does the bible say the earth is a circle and is held by pillars and doesnt move and has 4 corners ? The earth is a sphere not a circle which is flate and a sphere doesnt have corners! The bible also states that in matthew 4:8 the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them? How can you see the whole kingdom if the world is round ? Sounds like some greek mythology mt olympus and almighty zues. How could the human race start with just 2 people ? And if so y would god be against insest? We all related right according to the bible ! Then explain the different ethnicities ? If god love everybody then why slavery ? If you believe in the bible then why dont you follow the real then commandments not the one everyone is taught today but the real commandment were god says to moses that these are the ten commandments cause the ones followed now ,moses threw down then stones and broke them before he ever read them to everybody.Exodus 34:28I. Thou shalt worship no other god.

II. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.

III. The feast of unleavened bread thou shalt keep.

IV. Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest.

    V. Thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest,
and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end.

VI. Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear before the Lord God.

VII. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven.

VIII. Neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.

IX. The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God.

    X. Thou shalt not seethe a kid [ie, a young goat] in his mother’s milk. Explain to how the things that happened in this world today isnt because of people reading the bible I.e slavery , the bible states that isrealites were to be slaves and the bible do describe them as darker skin, Christopher Columbus how followed the bible thought the world was flate came to America and say darker skin people in which the bible say are slaves but were native American now we got slavery and the bible tells how mich to sell slave which happened it said what to do to slave when they didnt obey including whipping and killing ! So honestly black people should be mad at the bible and god if its really his words! And yes I am black. Before you say I should read the bible I have twice and instead of becoming a believer I laugh at how dumb it sounds and how can someone read this and take it seriously? Your taught to believe and dont ask questions or you going to hell type stuff but if u really read it with out a bias thought already you would see the issues with this so called word from god the bible

I, for many years, did not believe in God because I experienced so many difficult and painful things in my own life. Perhaps it was not so much that I did not believe in God, but rather I knew of this God but couldn't believe that he could be so cruel as to allow so many horrible/unthinkable acts to take place in this world. Even though I went to church when I was a child, and had knowledge of some of the more well know areas scripture (moses, easter, christmas, adam and eve etc) they were not real to me - simply stories.
About 25 years ago, God came into my life and revealed himself to me personally in so many ways and that I could not deny his existence any longer. He did this to me not just one time but on many occasions over a period of a few years that I finally, after he let me know that he wanted me to serve him, agreed to do so. However, I still struggled with so many of the "bible stories". They seemed illogical and far fetched even though I finally knew God was real. What started me on the path to at least opening up my understanding a bit was a book by C.S. Lewis entitled "Mere Christianity". This book does not answer the detailed arguments but was for me, a beginning. I can say at this point in my life, after being in different churches and studying scripture for over 20 years, God does desire to have a real, true relationship experience with people. It seems illogical but it isn't. I am sure that my comments will not convince many of you here, nor are they here for arguments sake...but I have been where you are and will be praying for you.

  • May 22, 2014 at 4:34 PM

"revealed himself to me" ... what is any rational person supposed to make of that?

"illogical and far fetched" Bible stories. Yes, so many of them are, aren't they?

I know a lot about Christianity first hand, and have seen many people that have spend a lifetime studying and rationalizing the Bible. The complex systems of rationalization are quite impressive.

If you study other religions and history enough, you start to see how it all came together with many borrowed and shared stories and concepts. You don't have to play all these Christianity games to be good, spiritual, social, loving, loved ... You can even believe in God.

“If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things." - Descartes

Take a look around; there are no supernatural things happening! All ancient writings were written by people alone. There is no magical kind of inspiration that only comes to certain people at certain times. I like parts of the Bible not unlike how I like parts of other books ... and movies. The Bible has no monopoly on love ethics or spirituality.

Faith ... as in blind faith ... is overrated. It's a mistake. It's a false answer used to try to plug up all the holes.

  • May 25, 2014 at 5:32 PM

If all the holes were plugged up, there would be no such thing as faith

  • May 27, 2014 at 1:38 AM

I didn't say the holes were plugged up. Faith is used to TRY to plug up the holes.

A brave and honest seeker of truth is willing to accept that some things are currently unknowable while continuing to learn about the cosmos.

"What we need is not the will to believe, but the wish to find out, which is exactly the opposite." (Bertrand Russell)

To the Anonymous that posted continuously his "contradictions". Honestly, I personally do not see these as contradictions. I just see them as what God does. He is visible. He is invisible. Well, maybe he just does both. Now, I cannot directly quote the bible like many of the people in the previous posts because simply I have not read it. I did not get indoctrinated with my religion (Catholic), it just came as common sense to me.

Now, in response to the theory of Evolution, I believe it is in fact the truth. It just makes sense. But I do not see it as proof that God isn't real. In fact, just the opposite. Everything has got to happen somehow, it is a little Naive to say that God is not responsible for things in nature when some of them nobody knows how they happen. True, there is a central theory surrounding evolution, but by no means is that the only one out there. Anything is possible.

Now, in respect to there religions, (WARNING: My views and opinions do not represent other people opinions on the matter, for they may appear to be, well... A little out there) who is to say that any one religion is the complete and whole truth? Personally, I believe that it is really based on perspective. Christians, like myself, believe that when we die we either go to Heaven or Hell. (I apologize if any of these next statements are incorrect, I admit to being a tad bit ignorant on these religions, and Christianity also I guess) Hindu's believe in reincarnation. Buddhists too. Those who follow Islam believe in Paradise and Hell. Now, my point behind all of these is I believe that nobody really understands what the afterlife is. It is too enigmatic. In the shadows if you will. Partially seen, but never completely understood. This is also true for how the world works. Anyways, The Afterlife is different depending on your perspective. Christians perceive Heaven or Hell when they die. Hindu's and Buddhist's perceive reincarnation. Muslims Paradise or Hell. I wish I could explain my theories better. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not out to convert people into my beliefs. That's the beauty of it, you can believe whatever you want. It just depends on your point of view.

Now, by no means does this describe all non-believers that have posted. Just a certain handful. In fact, most non-believer I have met have been quite respectful. But again, a certain handful... This handful seem to be displeased that Christians are in fact Christians. Never before have I seen an atheist try and argue against Islam, Hinduism, or Buddhism, to name a few. I believe that you people do in fact not agree with our beliefs, or those of these other religions. I just want to ask a friendly question. No hostility, you don't even have to answer if you don't feel like it. Why does it seem to be solely the Christian faith? Now, I know what some people think when I say this, "Ohh, now he is whining about how we always go after him. Ha. Ha." I assure you this is not the reason. I do not see your insults as insulting or your sarcasm as mockery. I really don't care what your opinions about me are, or about my beliefs. I just want to ask a friendly, valid, (as far as I have seen) question. In fact, I believe that this whole "argument" has been an exercise in futility. Your opinions clearly won't change because of anything I say, or anyone else says. If you are going to change your opinions, it will be by your own doing, not by any of ours. And the same goes for my opinions.

If anyone has anything to add, or they disagree with me, I would love to hear it. I am open to anything.
    -Sincerely- A Stephen King Fan.

A high percentage of internet users are in America, and probably a majority of Theists on the internet are Christian. Many Americans, even if they are not Christan, have more knowledge of Christianity than other religions. This is probably why it seems that Christianity is criticized more the other religions. As for me, I reject anything that has a supernatural aspect. I'm open to Deists, Pandeists, Agnostics, and Weak Atheists, but I disagree with Theists because they accept a supernatural aspect. However, I do have many friends that are Christian, but most of them are very progressive, don't interpret the Bible literally, and mostly focus on the social and community service aspects of their churches. Some of them that think a little more like me, have moved to Unitarian Universalist churches where you don't have to believe in supernatural stuff, and can continue to participate in community service and fellowship.

  • May 31, 2014 at 8:38 PM

Nice to know. I too do not interpret the Bible literally. It was written by people, and people will never fully understand what lies around them and what lies after them. I thank you for your input.
I guess I just don't understand why some people have to turn a friendly article into a debate/argument. Not necessarily you Anonymous on May,30. Just a couple atheists on a website posted as the "Essential Bible Blog" just kind of strikes me as people who want to just insult people with different opinions than them. Anyway, I appreciate the answer, it really clears things up.

  • June 1, 2014 at 1:33 AM

To Stephen King Fan. If you have not read the Bible, I do not think you can give opinion about it . It is like you have not read a book and you get into a discussion about it and give your opinion. If you are a Catholic in religion , good . But you have to read the Bible to know what you are talking about. Christianity is a faith, a belief, which you will understand only if you are genuinely interested in it. Our Lord Jesus Christ who is the Son of God did not come onto this world to bring Christianity, but to make us know who our creator is and how we can have a personal relationship with Him. Jesus said I am the way, whoever accepts me accepts my Father.I do not want to quote the Bible here, but I suggest sincerely to you instead of losing precious time with these two anonymous people contradicting each other to open your New Testament and start reading it.the whole Bible is written by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you will find out when you start reading it. And one last suggestion from me, take it or leave it, start reading from The book of John. Then go back to Matthew m,Mark and Lucas .It is easier to understand and go on. GOD BLESS YOU AND LEAD YOU WHILE YOU ARE READING IT. MY PRAYERS WILL BE WITH YOU.

  • June 1, 2014 at 12:30 PM

A Stephen King Fan, I'm glad you appreciate my comment as I do yours. As education slowly marches forward globally, I hope and predict that there will be a decrease in those that interpret ancient writings literally. I don't think everyone has to think like me, but I certainly would like to see people who have spiritual interests find a path that is copacetic with science. There are many options along those lines.

  • June 4, 2014 at 4:58 PM

Ar, as a response to your opinion, aren't you doing the same thing to me as you say I am doing to the Bible? Judging me without knowing me? To be completely frank, I do not appreciate your *quote unquote* Lecture. I know what I know and I know how I know it, it is really none of your business what I should be doing...
I also bet you have gone against the Bible, for the Bible bans
-Letting your hair become unkempt (10:6)
    -Touching an unclean animal (5:2)
    -Tearing your clothes (10:6)
-Eating an animal which doesn’t both chew cud and has a divided hoof (cf: camel, rabbit, pig) (11:4-7)
    -Mixing fabrics in clothing (19:19)
    -Trimming your beard (19:27)
-Cutting your hair at the sides (19:27)
-Not standing in the presence of the elderly (19:32)
-Entering a place where there’s a dead body as a priest (21:11) Tough for Funerals
    -Selling land permanently (25:23)
See, now obviously some of these are ridiculous. Clearly these are the words of humans. God doesn't care about our hair or whether we have mixed fabrics, he just cares whether we are good people.

A Stepen King Fan let me put a few things right . I am from a mixed marriage but my mother being an Armenian orthodox ,I was brougt up typically as an Armenian Orthodox which means going to church every Sunday morning ....keeping xmas and Easter in the usual manner as typical catholics do too, I suppose . I holy communion twice a year, and so on. I had a religion but no faith ,I didnot even think if God was real or just a myth. Then I married a very nice Greek guy and we came to live in his country . It was here that I got more dissapointed than ever because the church
priest looked at me as a heretic because I was not a Greek Orthodox but an Armenian orthodox. That is when I started reading the NT to ffind out where Jesus writes about these things....and of course I found nothing relating tags as unfortunately we Christians created the tags. I read the NT several times and looked for a church which teaches from the word and has no tags and there I found or rather the opposite ,The Lord found me. I was reborn (as the N T says and accepted Jesus as my Saviour. When I read your first remark on this page , you reminded me of myself ...I was a good person hurt nobody and had lots of friends , but had no freedom in my soul...something was missing in my life and that was my Lord Jesus.
God never presses anybody ,he created us with a sound mind, so we are responsible for each and every action and we have to give an account to God for each action one day.
This is what I have understood from the NT and this is my belief. I am sorry if in any way I insulted you in my previous remark but whatever it was that hurt you I deeply regret . Thank you for reading this and God Bless.

The Golden Verse of the New Testament

"John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
I am asking myself if there is any other relegion that talks about this kind of LOVE......Just my thoughts.....

  • June 7, 2014 at 5:07 PM

Oh! another beautiful verse in the same Chapter , that is John 3:5,6,7 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
It was just another thought I had as I was reading my Bible..........

  • June 7, 2014 at 5:22 PM

Isaiah 53 What a prophetic word it is

verses 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken"

yes, for the whole world he was crucified. And His crime was ? Really why was He crucified? He only cured sick people and loved every sinner US. Thank you Jesus

These "Top 10 Reasons the Bible is True" do a really good job in supporting the idea that the Bible is not of God. It falls completely short. It's laughable that the words evidence and scrutiny are used. There is no detail. It's human nature to make these mistakes. People see what they want to see. Fortunately we have science which is exactly what we need to help us avoid these blunders.

Thank you for putting the breath of life in me and a sound mind to accept you as my Creator .Amenn

At the Last supper Jesus explained to His disciples that He was going to be arrested and judged by the Pharisees and be put to death. The disciples didn’t understand much, then but only after His resurrection they remembered His words at the Last supper.
Acts 1:2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
    Acts 2
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

  • June 8, 2014 at 5:53 AM

    Isaiah 45:23
By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.’

    Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

    Revelation 1:7
Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Today is HS Day. When you are baptized with the HS, then you experience super natural things.
God's plan is always excellent. He didn't leave the disciples alone , but as Jesus had promised He sent the HS. The Holy Spirit will be with us as long as the church is here. When the "Prince" of this world comes( which is very soon) to govern this world, there wont be Church or HS . The thought of that gives me shivers.

Top 10 Reasons The Bible is True, I agree fully and don't bother with questions and answers about that subject. The Bible is TRUE.

He was born about 2000 years ago, in a strange way. He lived poorly and helped His father as a Carpenter. As a baby He made a King tremble for his Throne; as a child he saddened the educated Pharesees and as a grown up He controlled the power of Nature (The rough sea,) He opened the eyes of blind people, and raised dead people. He never paid for anything by money . He never wrote any books, and yet no bookshop in this world would ever have space for all the books that are written about Him. He never composed any music, and yet there are hundreds of hymns about Him and hundreds of musicians have composed music about Him. He never establised any school, and yet people who were His students could have stood up in any school in the world, with their knowledge. He never had an army, never enrolled a soldier, and yet world Leaders who came after Him, couldn't have as many volunteer followers as He has (NOW)....

The names of big Leaders that came during the centuries didn't remain, but just vanished. , but the name of this Man is known to almost everyone for 2000 years. When He was 33years old, He was betrayed from one of His followers, another one denied Him, and all the others abandoned Him . Hos own people asked for His death sentence., a Roman Governor agreed to that, and He was crucified ….And yet, the grave couldn't hold Him The Heavens opened to receive Him.

He is the One whom God appointed as Judge for alive and dead people when it is time....(very soon)

The name of the Person is JESUS. Which means God is our Saviour.

    Is He yousr Saviour?

Many people just see what they want to see, and the only purpose for rational thought is to support their snap-judgements based on emotion. False schools of thought build from there.

Science, on the other hand, is a school of thought that is self-correcting. False ways can't go very far.

    To Anonymous of June 11,2014

I had seen your remark but as I said I don t want to comment on anybody s remark any more. For me the Bible is the Absolute truth. I received this letter in my e mail, from ten reasons....this morning .and I opened it....Since you insist for an answer here you are ! The Bible is the only self correcting book I met. Before you start your new day you can read a chapter from the NT. Your day will be more calm, more productive, and more blessed If you give Thank to the Creator for what you have, every day, your health, your family, your dear friends, your peace, your food , and many other things . Give me a chapter of a science book that you can read in the morning and have a calm day! And give me an example of a science book which will make you self correcting.Science has done a lot of good things, but look at the wars and massacres that are being done today with what science created. Does that give you any peace now?Have a.....peaceful sleep,!

  • June 22, 2014 at 12:05 PM

Both science and religion have been used as tools for good and bad. The term "self-correcting" means that a system of thought corrects itself or a person corrects his/her self. If a system of thought corrects a person, it not "self-correcting", it's "learning" or "inspiration". The system of thought and the person are separate.

Too me science and scientific discovery are very inspiring. It's awesome to learn about the Cosmos ... to look up at the stars and know that we evolved from stardust. It connects us to everything in the universe. And I'm not saying that a God didn't start it all, but the God of the literal Bible is ridiculous. To think that we just magically appeared part way through the awesome development of the universe is a disappointing idea. And that God went around hiding fossils to fool us is ridiculous as well.

The Bible doesn't change. It's stagnant and old. Science changes, adapts, and grows. People with courage adapt and grow with it. The love ethics of the Bible have been improved upon using science, psychology, and philosophy. Limiting yourself to one book seems ridiculous.

"I call that mind free which resists the bondage of habit, which does not mechanically copy the past, nor live on its old virtues: but which listens for new and higher monitions of conscience, and rejoices to pour itself forth in fresh and higher exertions." - William Ellery Channing

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." - Carl Sagan

  • June 23, 2014 at 3:18 AM

You are right. The Bible does not change it s the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Have in mind though that whatever came out of the mouth of God has come true. Not only creation but the prophetic word. Obviously you don t follow these things, I mean how today s worlds political developments have been prophesied in the old testament and in Revelation. So there is no need for God to self correct Himself. But science has to because it does mistakes. That s the difference between God s Word and Sience

  • June 24, 2014 at 3:52 AM

Like I said, people see what they want to see. Prophecies are no more real than the psychic powers of a swindling fortune teller. Enlightenment comes through the methods of the scientists and skeptics. Over time, religions will fall under the veil of myth, and biblical stories can finally be heard, and in some cases enjoyed, without the misguided preaching of severally exaggerated implications.

    CORRECTION: severely exaggerated implications.

    Dear Whitney

I have an interest in seeking the truth, because that is the basic philosophy of Hinduism.
Unlike Christianity and Muslim religions, which do not allow any questioning, Hinduism
is based on search for the truth. No heresy is performed even if I question words ascribed to God.

I have studied Bible, Quoran, Buddhist literature along with Hinduism.

I sincerely believe that Christianity did the wrong thing by accepting Old Testament in toto as God's word.
Old Testament, full of falsities and evil deeds (genocide by Jews) belongs to Jews, who themselves considered
Jesus as a blasphemer. Most of the old testament has no archaeological proof and some of it is outright
inconsistent with our present knowledge. God could not have made mistakes. So it clearly amounts to that the
people who wrote it were illiterates, who for unknown purpose, wrote it as if out of the hat. Seems more like
1001 Arabian Tales. How can you explain the Genesis story, Adam being born around 4500 BC, Tabernacle,
Noah's flood, God being a guide nearly every day etc etc etc.

To me a much better explanation is that Moses and Aron wanted to lord it over the Jews so they created the story that they had regular audiences with God. Moses got Aron installed as the high priest and collected huge wealth in the name of offerings. Whenever there was any revolt, Moses will say that he had an audience with God, and God will get angry if there is any disobedience.

Also it is repeatedly said that "I am the God of Abraham, I am the God of Moses, I am the God of Isaac."
By this, the so called God testifies that He is not a universal God, but only the God of the Jews.It would have been much better
to let Him remain just there - as an imperfect God of Jews. Why suddenly God has stopped giving personal audiences to the mighty Jews? Also, why did the Jewish God not save them from the holocaust? All this raises serious doubts about the Jewish God being nothing but a figment of Jewish Priest imagination.

Also, God is all love and infinite and everlasting. He is perfect. A perfect thing can never change by the very definition.
By changing it becomes imperfect. So, by saying God became angry and sought vengeance, you are saying He
is an imperfect God. So, the concept of God in the old testament is a very incorrect concept, of illiterate people, with even the basic philosophical ability. Even the concept of the day of judgement, Hell and Heaven are completely created to force people into fear and submission. God does not work by fear, but by love.

I think Christians should ponder over these facts. Accepting Jesus does not mean that you should take Judaism lock stock and barrel. The Roman church made a huge error in doing that. It will be better to redress it at some stage.

The author of the posts in your first link makes a lot of ignorant remarks. Many statements are assumed, taken out of context, or misquoted.

The second link you gave was much better. Some of the points were pretty weak, though. It's interesting how all of this points to Catholicism more than Protestantism. Everyone is just different levels of crazy.

Unfortunately for both links, they were too flawed and biased to be used as real proof against the Bible. They could easily be argued against.

Soery to poke holes, but the principles of "music" are not always valid. It's always based on acoustical physics in relation to harmonic frequencies, whether higher or lower in the overtone series. The perception of intervallic consonance and dissonance is not consistent over time. It has changed increasingly throughout the ages. It also changes based on locale, age, and personal preferences. Music is a gift from God, however, and we will use it however we can to bring people closer to Him.

I think many people make the mistake of believing God does not exist simply because there are bad things on earth. Yes, cancer, diseases, natural disasters, and death are all terrible things, but I would propose that these things were not brought on by God, but are a direct result of our sin. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life." There are earthly consequences for all of our sins, but we always have the option of turning to Christ, falling on our faces before him, and handing over every part of our lives to the perfect creator.

On this site there are a lot of wild claims about fulfilled prophecies (300 of them? Others have claimed lower numbers) but no one has offered any clue as to where a list can be found (let alone offered to provide one!) No wonder non-christians think it is all a big bluff!! I have spent years looking for such things without finding more than a dozen, and most of those were a bit stretched, so here is the challenge: Give us the list or stop making claims that can't be sustained.

I am sure a simple GOOGLE of "bible prophecy fulfillment" could reveal all that you desire. 300? I don't know, nor do I care. I am not caught up in the number...
My favorite prophecies are anything that had to do with the Messiah coming to earth!

Does Harry Potter stand with you above list?

    Manuscript Evidence. Yes
    Archaeological Evidence. Yes
    Eyewitness Accounts. N/A
    Corroborating Accounts Yes
    Literary Consistency. Yes
    Prophetic Consistency Yes
    Expert Scrutiny Yes
    Leader Acceptance. Yes
    Global Influence. Yes
    Changed Lives. Yes

The bible is true but not because of the above.

    1. Formal fallacy. The fact that a text has manuscripts does not make its contents "true".
    2. On the other hand, there are far more things that has no archaeological backup whatsoever.
    3. And if the Cargo Cults write down their experiences of planes delivering gifts from their gods, it will be "eyewitness accounts"... and yet, it will not be an accurate explanation of the phenomenon but only an expression of their faith (,
    4. Yes, and some of them regard them as a fanatical and extremist cult. Tacitus (Ann. 15.44), Suetonious (Claud. 25) and Pliny (Nat. 7-10) depict them as superstitious and depraved.
    5. The question of the internal consistency of the Bible concerns the coherence and textual integrity. The Bible, as we know it, underwent a process of edition and selection. There were over 15 versions of it in ancient times... As a matter of fact, it become to be this "consistent" only after much editing (
    6. Read above. Imagine now how many prophecies could have been left out of the final product.
    7. The fact those ppl had "high standards" is not proven nor described anywhere, in any ancient source. From an argument based upon the selection of texts you cannot possibly conclude anything about the truth of its contents,
    8. Leader Acceptance is in Rhetoric a statistic argument. Although persuasive, that line of reasoning is flawed and it is extremely DANGEROUS. Not because 90% of Nazi Germany thought their country was under the attack of a massive Jew conspiracy, the conspiracy existed. Then again, before Christianity, Rome as a whole had different beliefs, were them true?
    9. Global Influence... so it had Star Wars, but it doesnt mean the "force" exist as such. "Global argument" is not an argument for validity. In fact it is not even serious.
    10. Changed Lives. Yes, but because all those ppl had FAITH, not because the contents or a book can be proven unmistakably "true".
Note, about "love and good works": contrary to what most ppl think it was no other than St. Agustine who first came upon the concept of "holy war" (City of God 1.21). it is simply abhorrent and it justifies David murdering babies (Ps. 137:9) I disgress; my point is, if we acknowledge the role the Holy Scripture have in turning us into better people, we have also to admit that It has also turned some of us into terrible human beings. And so, your argument is not valid.
The faithful profess first to believe in God, whose majesty is INCOMPREHENSIBLE (Jer. 32:19, caps mine ofc). For, as the Apostle says, He dwells in light inaccessible, which no man hath seen, nor can see (1 Tim. 6:16). No man shall see my face and live (Exod. 33:20). The mind cannot rise to the contemplation of the Deity, whom nothing approaches in sublimity, unless it be entirely disengaged from the senses, and of this in the present life we are naturally incapable.

Where were you all this time? We have proved beyond doubt that the Bible is true.
Haven’t you read this page from the beginning?
I am sure you haven’t read the Bible, which is written by simple believers led by the Holy Spirit. Do you know the Holy Spirit? The third person of Christian Trinity God? If you are a real Christian you would not only believe in Him but you would have experience with Him. Christianity is a faith. If you have faith in the only God, you will be definitely be guided in your life by Him.
I don’t have time for proving to you or anybody else on this page again about the reality of God’s existence, and His only Son Jesus Christ through whom we got our redemption and d freedom.
Read it. And read the Bible
Jesus is coming back soon and we real believers have to concentrate on our Bible studies and saving genuine people who are really interested about Christianity.
    God is Love
