Citywide Bible Reading Campaign in Philadelphia

For the past year Scripture Union has been part of an inter-faith effort sponsored by the National Bible Association to promote Bible reading in the City of Philadelphia. Called Philadelphia National Bible City 2009, the project culminated with a series of public Bible readings at places like City Hall, Independence Hall and the historic Christ Church. (At left, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter reads Psalm 27.) As part of the project, Scripture Union and the American Bible Society produced a student edition of The Essential 100 and distributed 100,000 copies of it to schools throughout the city. How wonderful!!- It brings to my remembrance the public reading of the Book of the Law of Moses by Ezra, and the confession of sin, and the worship that followed.
Oh, that we could do this in all our cities!
